I Found A Pigeon
Thank you for caring enough about our feathered friends to make the effort and take the time to look for the lost racing pigeon's owner. Please take a moment to read the information below and fill out the form with the required information. We will help you contact the owner and enable you to return the bird to them safe and sound.

What do I do?

•What do the numbers and letters on the band mean? Read below.

The colour of the band changes each year. A fancier can tell the age of the bird by the colour of the band. However you can read the year of of the band. you can also find the organization identification and the unique ID number on the ring much like your ID no. In your ID book so lets look at the white ring and this is what you will be able to use to locate the owner ZA ND 01629 2009
ZA = South Africa
ND = Durban just like our number plates
01629 = Unique Id number for this birds
2009 = The year the bird was born in

NB: all the clubs in south africa have there own identification marking such as ZA PORT, ZA BLUFF, BORDER, NPN and so on.

The racing pigeon's band will be registered with an orginization which could help you to find the owner I say could because sometimes fanciers trade, swap, purchase and give there birds to other fanciers so the contact numbers listed with the ring registrar will not include the new owners of the bird only the origanal owner of the rings.

Important

We can only help you with ZA ND banded pigeons.
For pigeons banded with any other letters we might be able to advise you as to who to contact but do not have access to the individual clubs rings information.

If the pigeon does not carry a life band on its leg we regret that we cannot help trace the owner. If you are concerned about the pigeons well being we suggest that you contact your local humane society.

Please use this email to report a lost pigeon with ZA ND rings lost pigeon and clearly state all the information on the ring with your loaction eg: Durban, Bluff .. etc... to assist us with the location of its owner

What to Do If you cannot find the owner

In most cases when I have been unable to locate the owner of a bird I have done the following

1 Gave the bird food and water for a few days and allowed it to recover from what ever the reason was for it staying at my house
2 If the bird looks alert and able to fly take a small drive in your car for about 5 km and let it go chances are it will go home by itself

What to do if the bird is hanging around your house and you cannot catch it to find its owner

In this case you can feed it but you run the risk of it setting up shop at your house permanently but in most cases it will depart on its own when it is ready to do so.

How do I care for the pigeon till I am contacted?

Pigeons will eat most seads including rice but I have found that the regular soup mix found at your local supermarket works best.
they will also not pass up a good wild bird garden mixture that is also sold almost every where, as for water a dish that can hold at leat 1 cm of water works great as pigions unlike other birds suck yes suck up there water so they need a slightly deeper dish than say you regular domesticated birds

Thank you again for caring enough about our feathered friends !!!
